The platform is used for active training in recognising melodic lines. We use 75 different melodic lines built from the sounds of two different pianos and a bassoon. Every melodic line comes in versions with intervals of one semitone, two semitones or four semitones.

WORKING WITH THE PLATFORM. After logging in you see the selection tiles. The melodic lines test opens from the Test — melodic lines tile TEST — MELODIC LINES tile. This is the main part of the module: it trains and measures the recognition of pitch. One test is eighteen randomly chosen melodic lines.
Tiles on the home page

Once you enter the test you hear a melodic line straight away — there is nothing to click. If you hear nothing, check whether your browser blocks autoplay; the test screen carries a hint link.

Your task is to recognise which of the nine patterns matches the line you heard. The patterns are arranged in a three by three grid — you click the one you believe is right.

LISTENING AGAIN. The button Play button in the bottom left corner replays the melodic line from the beginning. You may use it as many times as you like until you feel sure — the number of replays is stored together with the answer, but it does not lower your score.

YOUR ANSWERS. Progress is shown by eighteen circles in the middle of the bottom bar. A green circle is a correct answer, a red one is wrong, and white means the attempt has not been made yet. The test is finished when every white circle has turned green or red.

AN INCORRECT ANSWER. After a wrong choice a red field appears in the bottom left corner, showing the pattern that was actually played together with a play symbol: Red field with the correct answer Clicking it plays the correct answer — you may listen as long as you wish and compare it with what you heard. This part of the exercise matters most for rehabilitation.

While you listen, the patterns are locked. When you want to move on to the next melodic line, click the play button on the right — the patterns become active again and the test continues.

EIGHTEEN ATTEMPTS. Answers are recorded and serve for statistics, data analysis and reports. That is why it matters to reach the end of the eighteen. This is how we examine pitch perception over a longer test — taking fatigue and loss of concentration into account.

A test broken off halfway does not count towards the statistics. In the history you will see it marked NOT FINISHED, NOT SAVED, so you can always check whether the previous attempt reached the end.

END OF THE TEST. After the eighteenth answer the patterns fade and all circles are filled. A green TEST button appears on the right — it starts another test from scratch. Below it is the way back to the main menu.

THE PRACTICE MODULE. Once you have finished a full test you can use the PRACTICE module and listen to melodic lines of your own choosing. Until you finish a test, the module stays locked.

The choice of instrument and interval is one grid of nine tiles: the three rows are the instruments (green piano, blue piano, bassoon) and the three columns are the intervals of one, two and four semitones. The tile with the darker background is the current choice.
Choice of instrument and interval
Having chosen the instrument and the interval, you click any of the nine patterns and listen to it as often as you like. Practice has no answers and no scoring — it is a free way of getting used to how the melodic lines sound.

HISTORY. In the MANAGE — MELODIC LINES panel you will find the History of your tests: the date, the time and the result of every attempt. Wrong answers are shown as a pair of images — the first is the pattern that was played, the second (on a red background) is your choice. Correct answers are not drawn; they go into the final result, for example 11/18 OK.

THE MODULE PANEL. The MANAGE — MELODIC LINES tile gathers everything concerning this module: this manual, the recommendations, practice, result analysis and history. An administrator additionally sees the data export, the statistics and the way into platform administration.

THE MORE TESTS THE BETTER. As with any exercise — the more time you give it, the better it goes. One test a day, or every other day, is enough; it takes less than five minutes. Within a reasonable time you will build up reliable statistics. Do not be discouraged by wrong answers — at the beginning they are typical. For every 25 tests completed you receive a star on your account; users with three or four stars show a clear improvement in accuracy.

RECOGNITION RATE. In Analysis we compute the percentage of correct answers — this is how we measure your progress. At the beginning the figure fluctuates a great deal: one time you hit many answers, another time fewer. It becomes meaningful with a larger number of tests; practise persistently and you will see the recognition rate settle down and start to rise.

For users with several stars we prepare an individual report — a thorough analysis of progress, far richer than the recognition rate alone. In future it will serve to prepare an individual exercise plan, and the platform's authors to write a scientific publication.
CLOSING REMARKS. Do not worry about wrong answers, of which there may be very many at first — the earliest tests are sometimes entirely wrong. Only after a few or a dozen attempts do the first hits appear, which is why regular practice pays off. For consolation: while testing the platform we noticed that even people without implants find it hard to point at the right pattern. The exception are people with a musical ear — for them these tests are easy.

If you feel discomfort while exercising and listening to the sounds, report it at the centre where your speech processor is programmed. Listening to sounds should not involve pain or physical sensations in the body, such as twitching at the corner of the eye or of the mouth.
