Practical advice on using the application

General advice covering both modules of the platform: creating an account, sound settings and how to reach us. Hints about the exercises themselves are in the module instructions.

1. Creating an account. Accounts are not created by users themselves — fill in the registration form. Once your request has been reviewed you will receive a user number and a starting password by e-mail. You log in with the number, not with your e-mail address. If the message does not arrive, check your spam folder.

2. Password. After your first login the application will ask you to replace the starting password with your own. Never set a password identical to your user number — it exposes the platform to attacks. You can change the password at any time in the Account menu.

3. Automatic audio playback. Both modules start playing sound as soon as you enter an exercise, with no extra clicking. If you hear nothing, check whether your browser blocks autoplay (example for Firefox). It is also worth checking that the browser tab itself is not muted.

4. Volume level. As soon as you enter an exercise, set a comfortable volume on your device. A cochlear implant has a much smaller amplitude dynamic range than the natural ear, so sounds that are too loud or too quiet are recognised less well. It is worth experimenting: if something is unclear, try making it louder or quieter.

5. Asymmetric hearing. If your hearing clearly differs between the right and the left side, use an induction loop and feed the signal to the chosen implant. Without that, the dominant side does the recognition and the weaker side is not rehabilitated.

6. Microphone (speech perception module). Speech perception exercises require a microphone. Before the first recording the browser will ask for permission to use it — you have to grant it, otherwise recording will not work. The application lets you check beforehand whether the microphone works and whether the recording level is sufficient.

7. Where to find the instructions. The melodic lines module is described in the instructions. The speech perception module has an instructional video with subtitles and chapters. Advice concerning speech perception only (file formats, working with recordings) is collected on a separate page.

8. Your results. Your work in both modules is recorded and used for statistics, analyses and reports. That is why it matters to finish an exercise rather than break it off halfway — incomplete attempts are not included in the statistics. It is also pointless to "improve" your results by finishing only the successful attempts: such a picture is untrue and makes progress harder to assess.

9. Reporting problems. Please send information about incorrect behaviour of the application or hardware trouble to earplanted@uwb.edu.pl. If an error message appears on the screen, take a screenshot and attach it — it speeds up the fix considerably.

10. Terms and privacy. The conditions of use, the information about the data we collect and about withdrawing from the platform are described in the Terms of use.
